I'm glad you're here.
You've just subscribed to something a little different from the typical industry newsletter. Leisure Alchemy is intended to be an ongoing conversation, delivered to your inbox every Tuesday, that looks deeply at the human experience of leisure.
In the modern world, we are busier than ever before. Free time is scarce and precious. More than ever before, consumers are looking for ways to convert their rare free time into meaningful and memorable experiences. This newsletter is dedicated to understanding the human behavior that drives leisure experiences and the brands that craft and curate them.
The name Leisure Alchemy reflects the core tension at the heart of this industry. "Leisure" represents the goal — helping people convert their most precious resource, their free time, into experiences that are meaningful, fulfilling, and transformational. "Alchemy" acknowledges the business reality: turning that goal into a profitable, scalable operation requires creativity, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of human psychology. It is not easy. But it is extraordinarily interesting.
Each weekly edition is built around one or more of five thematic hubs:
01 — 🦉Philosophy & Culture: The Why
Before you can build a great leisure experience, you have to understand why people seek leisure in the first place. This hub explores the meaning of rest, the evolution of play, the psychology of escapism, and the deep human drives that make leisure not just desirable, but essential. These are the questions that most operators never have time to ask — and the answers that separate the truly great experiences from the merely good ones.
02 — 🔬Science & Psychology: The How
The neuroscience of relaxation. The biology of longevity. Consumer behavior under the microscope. This hub translates academic research and psychological principles into actionable intelligence for operators. If you've ever wanted to understand why a particular experience generates loyalty, or how the design of a space affects the way a guest feels, this is where we will explore these questions.
03 — 📈Business & Strategy: The Bottom Line
Profitability is not an accident. It comes from a clear operational vision, a powerful alignment of resources, and a systematic approach to excellence. This hub covers investment trends, operational best practices, brand storytelling, and the strategic frameworks that turn a great concept into a benchmark business. We want to learn from the brands and companies that are converting meaningful leisure experiences into successful businesses.
04 — ✨Innovation & Design: What's Next
Hybrid sports concepts. Wearable longevity technology. Next-generation spa design. Playful architecture. The leisure economy is evolving faster than most operators can track, and the gap between those who lead change and those who react to it is widening. This hub tracks the frontier so we can stay ahead of it.
05 — 🌍Destinations & Communities: The Where
Next-generation resorts redefining what a hotel can be. Senior living communities that are reinventing the concept of aging well. Watersports cultures, private member clubs, and the world's most compelling leisure ecosystems. This hub decodes the places and communities that are setting the standard — and asks what the rest of the industry can learn from them.
