The Week in Leisure: Heat Wave Edition

Navigating the New Climate of Leisure: From Coolcations to Nocturnal Escapes and Resilient Design

Summer isn’t even halfway over yet and already heatwaves have been circling the globe, with sweltering highs reported in mid-June across Asia, at the end of the month in countries across Europe, and then in the first week of July hitting a large portion of the U.S. It is getting harder and harder to find destinations to enjoy a mild summer.

But leisure businesses are getting more creative at shaping their offers around the fluctuations in temperature, promoting “noctourism” activities after dark, creating “islands of freshness” within air-conditioned facilities, or luring people away on “coolcations” to inherently chillier destinations.

My favorite approach from this week’s roundup, is the “Siesta Renaissance,” bringing back the midday respites that certain Hispanic and mediterranean cultures have traditionally practiced. It seems that taking a break in the middle of the day is not only good for our health, but also for our mood and our mindset.

Stay cool and siesta on . . . sounds like a good mantra for this summer!

🦉 Philosophy & Culture

The Siesta Renaissance: Reclaiming Midday Rest in a Warming World
As global temperatures rise, the ancient practice of the siesta is experiencing a modern resurgence, not just as a cultural tradition but as a necessary adaptation. This shift encourages a slower pace of life, fostering community engagement in cooler hours and prompting a re-examination of work-life balance. (Grist)

“The siesta is as old as humanity, and in fact, it goes beyond humanity. And you can see a lot of other species just simply being sensible with hot weather.”

—Simon Quilty, Australian National University

Noctourism: The Rise of Night-Time Leisure
With daytime heat becoming unbearable in many regions, cities are witnessing a growing trend of "noctourism," where cultural events, dining, and social activities shift to cooler evening hours. This adaptation allows for continued leisure and community interaction, redefining urban experiences and fostering a unique nocturnal culture. (Luxury Travel Report)

🔬 Science & Psychology

Sauna in Summer: The Surprising Benefits of Heat Acclimation
While seemingly counterintuitive, research suggests that regular sauna bathing, even in summer, can improve thermoregulation and help the body adapt to heat stress. Beyond physical benefits, the practice can also reduce cortisol levels and promote mental well-being. (Clear Light Saunas)

The Mental Toll of Heat Waves: Protecting Well-being in Extreme Climates
Extreme heat has a profound psychological impact, leading to increased irritability, anxiety, and cognitive difficulties. Understanding these effects is crucial for designing leisure experiences that support mental resilience and provide respite from climate stressors. (American Psychological Association)
